Richard Charles Bolich Obituary

Richard “Rick” Charles Bolich 81 died reluctantly, January 3, 2026, due to complications

from pneumonia. He was a long-time resident of Evanston, IL

Rick always had a great story to tell either about himself, his family while growing up in

Grand Rapids, MI, his time in the Marines or his interactions with friends, many times the

stories were hard to believe. Like his mother and father, he loved to entertain and was

always ready for a party. He had a remarkable gift of engaging anyone in conversation

always finding a way to connect.

At home, Rick was an active participant in his home life helping clean house, do dishes and

laundry, paint a room, tend plants and fix what needed fixing. He delighted in remodeling

projects, his and others, frequently lending his tools and expertise to friends and

neighbors. He took great pleasure in working on his home of 43 years.

He cherished his family and took great pride in providing for them and spending time

together. He especially enjoyed taking his children and then grandchildren on travel

adventures. He was grateful for the enrichment his family and friends gave to his life.

Animals held a special place in Rick’s heart. He enjoyed the companionship of many pets

over the years. He loved Kitt, his first and favorite cat, Tookie cat, Ruby his current dog and

Sarge, Ollie and Grace his late basenjis.

After graduating high school, Rick proudly served his country as a United States Marine

from 1962 to 1966. His time in the Marines was a defining chapter of his life and one he

often spoke of with pride and vivid storytelling. Following his military service, Rick

embarked on a long and successful career in remodeling sales throughout Chicago and its

suburbs. He took immense pride in his work—so much so that he would often point out

homes where he had installed kitchens, windows, doors, and more while driving through

neighborhoods.

He shared his passion for sailing and motorcycles with his good friend Charlie Stumpf. An

avid reader with a keen interest in history, he often discussed books and articles with his

favorite editor and sister-in-law, Mary O’Connor. Known for his playful humor, he tended to

make up words for things which was sure to make his friend Nancy Kuhr laugh.

Preceded in death by his parents Margaret A “Peggy “ and Richard Owen Bolich and his

brother Spencer Bolich.

Survived by his loving wife of 44 years Elizabeth (O’Connor), his children Angela, Richard

John “Rick” (Jennifer Marie “Jenny” Bolich), Paul and his beloved sister Mary Jill Hamelink

and brother Daniel Bolich. Adoring grandfather of Amber, Richard “Charlie” and Asher.

Rick’s legacy lives on through the stories he told and the deep love he gave to those around

him. His family and friends will always cherish the memory of his irreverent sense of humor

and his love of martinis.
