Mary Ellen Olcott, a woman of resilience, determination, immense talent, and a compassionate heart, passed away after a battle with cancer on September 22, 2024, at the age of 92.
She is survived by three loving children: Sarah Moore (Michael), Jonathan Olcott (Jeanne) and Andrew Olcott (Valerie) and five grandchildren: Melissa Moore, Jessica Krupka (John), Matthew Moore, Samantha Moore Eisa (Fred) and Elliott James Olcott and three great grandchildren: John Michael Krupka, Sienna Jessica Krupka and Naomi Rose Krupka.
Preceding her in death were cherished partners, Arthur Brieger and Bill Zamzow.
Mary Ellen's life was a symphony of accomplishments and interests that showcased her diverse talents and boundless curiosity. Her journey began with a musical scholarship in piano at the University of Akron, where her gift for music flourished. This early achievement was a testament to her dedication and skill, qualities that she carried with her throughout her life.
In 1973, Mary Ellen completed her degree and furthered her education with a Master's in Business Administration from Lake Forest College. Her academic pursuits were driven by a profound love for learning and a keen interest in nutrition, a field that intrigued her and became a lifelong passion.
Mary Ellen was a staunch advocate for women's rights evidenced by her volunteer work at The League of Women Voters, Planned Parenthood and A Safe Place Women’s Shelter. Her commitment to empowering others reflected her generous spirit and deep empathy.
Professionally, Mary Ellen made significant contributions through her work at the Corning Philharmonic, Impress Printing and Abbott Labs. Her colleagues remember her as a diligent and innovative professional who brought her energy and passion to every project she undertook.
Beyond her professional and volunteer work, Mary Ellen had a rich tapestry of hobbies that brought joy and fulfillment to her life. A lover of cats, gifted pianist, joyful singer, skilled knitter, a voracious reader, avid tennis player and accomplished bridge player, achieving the prestigious Life Master designation. Her adventurous spirit led her to kayaking, camping, and traveling, where she explored the beauty of nature and the world around her.
Mary Ellen's life was a testament to the power of determination, curiosity, and compassion. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and inspiration.

A remembrance will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, October the 10th, at the Gorton Community Center, 400 E Illinois Rd, Lake Forest, IL 60045. At 6:00 pm we will share stories about Mary Ellen, followed by a sing-along of a few of her favorite songs.
