Herbert C. Ives (aka Herbie) Herbert Ives was born on July 4, 1940 to Naomi Ives, in McBean, Georgia. In 1946, Naomi and her son Herb moved to Evanston, Illinois. Herb or Herbie as he was affectionally called attended Evanston Public Schools (Foster and Haven Junior High). He attended Evanston Township High school and received his GED. He later joined the US Army, September 27, 1963 and served in Korea. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, August 30, 1965, Herb returned home and was employed at Schaefer Liquor Store. Later in 1965, Herb was employed at the City of Evanston Bus Company from 1965 to 1973. Follow ing the bus strike in 1973, the Evanston Bus Company was taken over by Chicago Transit Authority; where later he joined the CTA which combined service with Pace. He officially retired from CTA over 23 years ago and from Pace Bus shortly thereafter. Our family’s first entrepreneur, not only worked for CTA and Pace Bus Services; but Herb also owned and drove a taxi for many years. Herbie was an avid book reader. He would read the Chicago Sun Times Newspaper from cover to cover, no matter how long it took. He loved history, and at times could take you back to things that happened over forty or fifty years ago. He also loved traveling with a group of friends to different cities who loved football. He enjoyed “Da Bears and the Bulls. Fishing was another of his favorites. He took pleasure taking his nephews and their friends in his camper to Fox Lake. The stories they would tell about Herb were hilarious. Family was important to him, and before his illness all special holidays, Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day were always held at his home. On April 25, 2026, God peacefully welcomed him home to be with his Mother Naomi and Brother Claude Brannon. Herb leaves to cherish his memory, 3 sisters, Ollie Copeland, Diane Meyers and Ida (Jerome) Aaron. 1 Niece, Ma ia Robinson; 2 Great-Nieces, Andrea Copeland and Kennedi Copeland. 4 Nephews, Michael Copeland, Andre (LaTanya) Copeland, Kyle Aaeon, Jor don Aaron; 1 Great-Nephew, Kobe Copeland, 3 Great-Great-Nephews, An drew, Amare and Armani. Special Friend, Charles Agnes. His faithful, loving Caregiver, Cedric (Tonya) Crawford; who Cedric called “Pops”, and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation will begin at 10:30am until the time of the memorial service at 11:00 am, Saturday June 6, 2026 at the First Church of God, 1524 Simpson Street, Evanston IL 60201. Interment private at Abraham Lincon National Cemetery, Elwood Illinois. Arrangements entrusted to Evanston Funeral & Cremation, Roland F. Weis director.
