George Seidenbecker Obituary

George F. Seidenbecker, PhD, 74, of Evanston, IL, died peacefully on July 11, 2018. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Anne Nickel Seidenbecker; four children - Amy, Kirk, Liz and Claire; sisters-in-law Mary Nickel Dahlberg and Nancy Nickel; his cousins Mary Brugliera of Evanston, Shirley Christell of Forest Park, Tony Kuhlmann of Utah and many other cousins.

George taught English at Evanston Township High School (ETHS) for 34 years, where he met some of his best friends and colleagues. He was known for his sense of humor, his love of language and, especially, puns. He created the Pun Club and headed the Creative Writing Club at ETHS; his students won many, many awards for their poetry and prose over the years. He nurtured creativity not only in the hundreds of students that he taught, but in family members as well.

In addition to his love of family and teaching was his passion for cars. Throughout his life, he had a series of cars beginning, as a young man, with a Triumph TR6, and later a Ford Mustang and a Chrysler convertible. He had humorously penned an "Auto Biography" in which he described the various cars he had driven throughout his life.

He was passionate about the Macintosh computer and spearheaded the installation of a Mac lab at ETHS. During his last years, he wrote reflections and poetry on his iPad. He had a gift for finding the positive in all situations; he was kind, open, and always supportive of others. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
