Atie W Zuurdeeg, 98 of Evanston, IL, passed away Wednesday November 2, 2022. She was born October 8, 1924, in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, the daughter of Hendrik Arnold Dingemans and Ida Bouwina Kutsch Lojenga. In 1952, she married Willem Zuurdeeg, who predeceased her. Her 2 loving sisters Cor van Leeuwen and Romee Verhoef also preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Robert (Jean) Zuurdeeg, Bart Zuurdeeg, and Walt Zuurdeeg. Cherished grandmother of Kelly (Mike) Capobianco, Erik Zuurdeeg, Amanda Zuurdeeg, Alexandra (Dustin) Dreckshage and Zach Zuurdeeg and great grandmother to Connor Capobianco, Riley Capobianco, and Clayton Dreckshage. Atie is also survived by many family members in The Netherlands. Atie was loved by all and was always there for her family, friends, and former students. She was a lifelong learner; starting with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from R.K. University in Nijmegen, then later received a PhD in French Literature from Northwestern University, then became a French professor at Augustana College where she taught for 16 years. Even in retirement, she continued to take courses at Northwestern’s Adult Education Program (OLLI). She continued to enrich her life through education, art, and volunteer work. She was a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation, giving tours of the architecture and history of various districts in the Chicago area. She was passionate about traveling and experiencing new cultures having visited 30+ countries.
A Memorial Celebration will be held from 2:00pm to 4:00pm Saturday November 12, 2022, at The Mather Home, 425 Davis Street, Evanston, IL. Interment private, Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 North Gross Point Road, Skokie IL, in Section E, N60ft of SE90ft of Lot 710, Space 1. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Atie’s name to ASPCA, Doctors Without Borders or the Chicago Botanic Gardens.
